Here’s what happens in The Lie:

1. Kayla (teen daughter) and her father Jay are driving to a ballet retreat. On the way, they pick up Kayla’s best friend Britney, who is going to the same retreat.

2. They stop on a rural road so Britney can go to the woods. After that, Jay hears a scream, runs back, and finds Kayla alone on a bridge. Kayla claims she pushed Britney off the bridge into a river.

3. They search for Britney’s body but can’t find it, assume she drowned. The parents (Jay and Rebecca) decide to cover up what happened to protect Kayla.

4. Britney’s father, Sam, becomes suspicious. There’s a confrontation; in the course of events, Sam is hit by Rebecca’s car (or Rebecca drives into him). They consider calling for help but instead leave him to die.

5. The next morning, Britney turns up alive. Her disappearance was part of a deceptive plan between her and Kayla—to fake a disappearance so Kayla could manipulate the situation.

6. Kayla’s motive: She feels her divorced parents have drifted apart, and she hopes this dramatic lie/tragedy will bring them back together. The truth comes out amid police sirens at the end.
